Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson- Robinson has made quite the impact in his first preseason with the team. He created quite the buzz nationally for his play as a fifth-round pick on his way to earning the backup job. Now it appears the rookie has earned his first award as an NFL player.

According to Mary Kay Cabot, Thompson-Robinson has been voted the team's Maurice Bassett Award winner by the local media for being the best rookie during training camp.

Recent past winners of the award include Cade York last year, Greg Newsome in 2021, Harrison Bryant in 2020, and Myles Garrett in 2017. The Maurice Bassett Award has been around since 1985. Bassett played for the Browns from 1954-56, and led the league in rushing during his rookie year.

For the local media this was a tougher decision than most years as the team has had an abundance of rookie talent put in outstanding performances. In addition to the promising draft class, the team had two undrafted rookies make the 53-man roster.

In the end it was DTR who wins out as he shined throughout the entire preseason and really earned the respect of his coaches and team in the process. He finished the preseason completing 63.8% of his passes (37-58) for 440 yards, with 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. He also made some nifty plays with his feet rushing for 69 yards on 14 attempts.

During a media session after today's practice Assistant General Manager Glen Cook had some praise when asked about the rookie. He said, "Dorian did what we asked him to do, he came in, we know that quarterback is the toughest position to play in all of sports and he just put his head down and he worked."

Hopefully, there will be more awards in Thompson-Robinsons future with the team or anywhere he may end up starting. The focus now turns to the franchise quarterback and what he can do with his opportunity on the field leading the most talented Browns roster many of us have ever seen.
