Scouting Potential Roster Cuts: Running Back

The Browns have a few roster spots that they should explore adding to from the cutdowns across the league. Who are the potential options?

The Cleveland Browns are hours away from beginning to make their final cuts as teams across the league must trim their rosters to an initial 53 players by 4 pm on Tuesday. A few teams who have already played their last preseason game started to announce cuts this afternoon.

Once all of the initial cuts are made, teams will have the opportunity to claim players who were cut that are subject to waivers. Any player who is a vested veteran, (meaning they have accrued four seasons of a minimum of six games played) aren't subject to claims and must agree to sign with a team.

I spent time over the past few days combing over rosters around the league and reviewed the performance of players in camp and preseason games who are reportedly considered on the bubble. I have focused a majority of time on players that I think the Browns could be interested in adding.

For me there are currently three roster spots I feel could be upgraded with a potential claim. They are running back #3, wide receiver #6 and of course kicker. Here are the players that I feel Andrew Berry should be looking at should they become available.

Running Back #3

With Jerome Ford dealing with a hamstring an addition is really needed. I am  open to keeping Felton on the roster as the fourth running back if he can contribute in the return game. Let's have a look at potential running backs that could be available after cutdowns.

RB - Trey Sermon - Philadephia

Sermon is the likely odd man out in a stacked running back room for the Eagles.

RB - D'Ernest Johnson - Jacksonville

Johnson has been in a battle to win the team's third running back role. He has averaged over 6 yards a carry with 2 TD's this preseason.

RB - Darrynton Evans - Buffalo

Evans has flashed this summer both out of the backfield and returning kicks. He has an uphill battle trying to make the Bills final roster.

RB - Elijah Dotson - LA Chargers

Dotson appears to be a real find as an undrafted free agent out of Northern Colorado. It is a crowded room in L.A. and unless they are prepared to move on from someone ahead of him on the depth chart, it will be tough to keep him.

Both Evans and Johnson have experience returning kicks and could potentially help provide a solution there if needed. We will have to see if any of these players become available but the Browns have to bolster the room after Jordan Wilkins fumbled away his opportunity today.
