Could Titans Hiring Of Brian Callahan Bring More Changes To Browns Staff?
The Browns are still working on filling several offensive coaching positions, but another one may be opening up.
On Monday night the Tennessee Titans announced the hiring of ex-Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan as their 20th head coach in franchise history. The move may cost Cleveland another assistant as Callahan's father, Bill Callahan is currently serving as the team's offensive line coach.
Speculation has mounted over the last few weeks that BIll would move on to join his son if he were to land one of the eight available head coaching jobs. Previously, Brian has expressed a desire to to coach with his father if the opportunity presented itself. Now it officially has.
Bill has been part of head coach Kevin Stefanski's staff since he came to Cleveland in 2020, and has been an integral part of the team's success on offense in recent years. Largely considered the "best offensive line coach in the game," Bill has continually produced one of the best O-lines in football year-over-year and nurtured players like guard Wyatt Teller into a Pro Bowler.
This past season, as the Browns battled season-ending injuries to their top three tackles, Callahan pulled the most out of reserve tackles James Hudson III and Geron Christian, who helped protect veteran quarterback Joe Flacco during a key stretch at the end of the season. Cleveland wound up earning a playoff berth, while Flacco threw for 1,616 yards and 13 touchdowns in the process.
Rookie tackle Dawand Jones also blossomed under Bill's guidance this season after thrust into action for an injured Jack Conklin in Week 1. Unfortunately, Jones saw his campaign cut short due to a season-ending injury as well, but is expected to have a bright future thanks to Callahan.
In order for Bill's son to pluck him from Stefanski's staff, he'd need to offer him an elevated job title, something that happens quite frequently in the NFL to pry in demand coaches away from their current teams.
Browns GM Addresses Future Of Nick Chubb
Bill, 67, has bounced around with seven different franchises throughout his NFL coaching tenure. That includes a short stint as head coach of the Raiders from 2002-2003. He's also served as an offensive coordinator twice throughout his career with the Raiders and Washington.
The Browns had an interview with Seahawks offensive line coach Andy Dickerson last week, reportedly for their offensive coordinator opening. However, that conversation could have been had with the the foresight of adding Dickerson to the staff if Bill does in fact leave to join his son in Tennessee.
