Watson Named Team Captain Along With Four Others
The Cleveland Browns have established their captains for the 2023 season. In a vote by the players, they save selected the following players as captain.
QB-Deshaun Watson
OG- Joel Bitonio
DE- Myles Garrett
LB- Anthony Walker
LS- Charley Hughlett
It is great news to see Watson be recognized by his teammates in this way. He has worked tirelessly the entire offseason to help Kevin Stefanski transform the offense to better suit his skills. On the field, Watson has shouldered the responsibility of getting skill players together for individual work during the entire offseason.
In addition to the work put in with his receivers, he also organized a trip to Puerto Rico to workout with players and have time to bond as a team. We can also assume that Watson was an instrumental voice in the team’s decision to start training camp at the Greenbrier in West Virginia, as he had that experience in his time with Houston.
For Stefanski, Watson has earned it by saying, “for Deshaun it’s very natural for him to lead, I think he’s comfortable leading from out in front, I think he’s comfortable leading and letting his teammates get credit, and that’s just something he has done his whole life.”
In addition to the five full-time captains, Stefanski also said there would be one additional captain selected for each game week. We can expect to see a total of six guys during coin-toss before the game.
Hopefully, the work that Watson has put in to earn the respect of his teammates will translate to a return to an elite level of play and wins for the team.
