What Did Kevin Stefanski Say About Browns New Coaching Staff Additions?

On Monday, the Browns officially announced the additions of four coaches to their staff and head coach Kevin Stefanski shared his thoughts on each new assistant.

The Browns officially announced the hiring of four assistant coaches on Monday ahead of new offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey's introductory press conference, and Kevin Stefanski shared he thoughts on each addition to his staff in a team press release.

“Ken has worked with and elevated some of the top quarterbacks in this league and will bring a fresh approach to our offense,” the Browns head man said of his new OC. “He knows what it takes to be successful at that position as he was one of the most successful college quarterbacks of all time and that has helped him become a tremendous coach. He has a history with this team and knows what the Browns mean to this city. We are very excited to bring in Ken as offensive coordinator.”

Noticeably, Stefanski made no mention of whether or not Dorsey would be the primary play caller, or if, like his predecessor Alex Van Pelt he'd also handle the quarterback coach responsibilities. Those are likely questions the former Bills OC will be asked at his introductory press conference.

Meanwhile, after moving on from tight ends coach T.C. McCartney several weeks back Cleveland looked to the college ranks to fill that void, adding former Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Rees spent just a season at Bama in 2023, helping lead them to an SEC title and the College Football Playoff in what became Nick Saban's final campaign with the program. Prior to that, he led offenses at his Alma Mater, Notre Dame that averaged more than 30 points per game and made a College Football Playoff appearance in 2020.

“Tommy has established himself as one of the top assistant coaches in college football and I have no doubt that will transition to the NFL,” Stefanski said. “He has an incredible football acumen and I look forward to bringing his insight and unique perspective from top college programs to our offense.”

The running backs coach role was another one that became available after the dismissal of Stump Mitchell. Stefanski and company turned to former Eagles running back and ex-Panthers running back coach Duce Staley to address that vacancy. Staley is no stranger to playoff success as he made two Super Bowl appearances during his playing days and was an assistant head coach when Philadelphia won it all in 2019.

“Duce was a tough, hard-nosed running back in this league and brings the mind-set and energy to his coaching style that is needed in the running backs room,” said Stefanski. “He knows how to get the most out of his players and has worked with some of the best running backs in the NFL. We are excited to have him leading our running backs.”

Lastly, after a special year for the Browns defense, Cleveland had an opening to fill for at defensive line coach and turned to the team who ended its season, snagging ex-Texans d-line coach Jacques Cesaire. Prior to his time in Houston, Cesaire served in the same role with the Bills from 2020-2021, aiding a defense that led the league in total defense and points allowed per game.

"Jacques brings energy and a proven track record as both a player and coach in this league,” Stefanski said. “He has made his impact felt in every place he has been, and we know he will come in and work to increase an already high standard for our defensive line.”
