Would Kevin Stefanski Relinquish Play-Calling To Browns New Offensive Coordinator?

With news that Alex Van Pelt is out as Browns offensive coordinator, Kevin Stefanski will look to bring some new voices to the offense and could even consider handing over play calling responsibilities
In this story:

With reports of the Browns moving on from a handful of offensive coaches, including offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, head coach Kevin Stefanski will now work to fill several key roles on his staff in the weeks ahead.

Through his first four years at the helm, Stefanski has remained adamant about calling the plays and rightfully so, considering he was brought to Cleveland because of his offensive prowess at previous stops in his career. However as he looks to fill Van Pelt's role, could giving up that responsibility be on the table?

On Thursday, Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot joined the Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima on 92.3 The Fan and noted that Stefanski could consider that move.

"I do think this opens the door for at least a discussion about that," Cabot says. "He's never been completely 100-percent wed to the job just for the sake of it. He always wanted the best person on the staff that was most capable of calling plays in that moment or in that season to do it, and that was always him. But if they find someone going forward that is better at the job then he would let that person do it."

It's fair to reason that in order for Stefanski to land one a top offensive mind to work alongside him, offering up the play-calling duties may be a carrot worth offering to potential candidates – something Cabot noted later in the interview as well.

4 Potential Cap Casualties For Browns This Offseason

Whether or not Stefanski would actually surrender the play-calling he has coveted since taking over as Browns head coach in 2020 remains to be seen. However, this week's coaching changes signal a potential shift in philosophy as Cleveland looks to return Deshaun Watson to his full potential going into the third year of his five-year deal with the franchise.

Stefanski has always said he would do what's best for the team. He'll spend the next few weeks figuring out what that looks like, even if that means potentially giving up the play calling.
