Buccaneers OC Dave Canales Looking for QB Kyle Trask to 'Point Guard' His Offense

Meeting with the media for the first time the new Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator communicated what he expects from his new quarterback.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales met with the media for the first time on Wednesday, and for a man whose job is to communicate clearly, he flexed those skills early.

Especially when talking about the Bucs' quarterback situation post-Tom Brady.

"Right now, I've got one Buccaneers quarterback - it's Kyle Trask," Canales said. "I really liked him coming out (of college)...The thing that we're going to help Kyle continue to build on here is to just be a point guard. Point guards don't have to be the one to score all the points - you just distribute. Play on time, get the ball out of your hands...You've got these bears chasing you and if you don't like bears chasing you, get rid of the ham."

Simple, and certainly something any quarterback can execute, right?

During his time as a coach with the Seattle Seahawks, two quarterbacks certainly showed the ability to turn those words into production, and both Russell Wilson and Geno Smith were named to Pro Bowls because of it.

"That's where the system has proven itself," Canales said. "If I go back to (USC) for a bit, you just start rattling off the quarterbacks that came out of there...One guy after the other - highly touted, gets a lot of accolades when really it's a system that is friendly for the quarterback...We are always trying to look for a way to put the quarterback in his comfort zone and build from there."

Canales has had a hand as a quarterbacks coach or offensive passing game coordinator for the past five seasons in Seattle.

And his simplistic approach has sent a quarterback to the Pro Bowl in each of them.

Most will say Trask will be his biggest challenge yet if he is indeed the point guard leading the Bucs onto the field this season.

But if Canales can find Trask's comfort zone, then perhaps the Buccaneers can surprise a lot of people.

Of course, there's still plenty of time to figure out if it will truly be Trask playing the role of distributor in Canales' offense with Tampa Bay, or not.
