Buccaneers’ Offensive Starters Get Honest Regarding Quarterback Battle
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' quarterback competition between third-year quarterback Kyle Trask and veteran quarterback Baker Mayfield is beginning to heat up as we are just entering the dog days of training camp.
Following the acquisition of Baker Mayfield in the offseason, the Buccaneers' planned to have both Mayfield and Trask fight it out for the starting spot. Before practices even began, the consensus amongst those who follow the Bucs was that the savvy vet in Mayfield would garner the staff's attention to become the starter in 2023. However, as training camp has continued to press on, it appears that Trask may be at the head of the race.

With the attention at an all-time high on the quarterbacks, Bucs' offensive coordinator Dave Canales also stated that the battle has gotten narrower since the beginning of camp.
Now in the thick of things in training camp, it is also important to gauge the other players' thoughts on the quarterback battle taking place.
Two players in particular, OT Tristan Wirfs and WR Russell Gage, both mentioned that the race between the two are tight along with passing on their compliments for each.
Wirfs and Gage are both integral parts of the Buccaneers' offense and will need the best play possible from either Trask or Mayfield to help the team succeed. At this point, however, it doesn't seem like either Wirfs or Gage is ready to specifically say who is standing out over the other, but at the end of the day they will perform to their best abilities no matter who is under center.
