Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield ‘Easily Outplayed Kyle Trask’ in Preseason Week 1
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback battle between Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask was heating up in practice ahead of Friday evening’s preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
But that appears to have changed following the contest and the Buccaneers seem to have a clear leader with Mayfield leading the way.

“Baker Mayfield easily outplayed Kyle Trask in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ preseason opener,” says NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal. “It was a composed effort from Mayfield and a scattershot one from Trask, who is expected to start the second preseason game. Mayfield reportedly kept his improved play going in Sunday’s practice and appears to be creating separation in this competition.”
In his one preseason game leading the Bucs Mayfield completed 89 percent of his passes while throwing a touchdown and earning a 132.9 quarterback rating.
When Trask got on the field he completed 60 percent while throwing one interception earning a 53.8 quarterback rating.
“It’s great for everybody, to be honest with you,” Mayfield said of the competition ahead of the preseason contest. “When the quarterback room is having success, it shows what this offense can be capable of. We’re distributors within this system — just getting the ball out…I think people are starting to see what we’re going to be capable of, and obviously, as we get used to pads more and more, the run game will get going as well. It’s just slowly coming together.”

As Rosenthal mentions, Mayfield’s success didn’t end Friday and extended into weekend practice although Monday wasn’t quite as successful.
Still, it would appear after one preseason game Mayfield is the leader of this battle.
Good thing for Tampa Bay in general, and Trask specifically, there are still two more games to go.
