Buccaneers Re-Sign Former Super Bowl Champion Quarterback
The theme of the offseason has been continuity for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Over the past few weeks, the team has retained multiple members of its offense who made an impact last season including quarterback Baker Mayfield, wide receiver Mike Evans, wide receiver Deven Thompkins, and running back Chase Edmonds.
The moves to keep current Buccaneers with the franchise continued on Friday afternoon. Per a cheeky announcement from General Manager Jason Licht, Tampa Bay plans to keep veteran quarterback John Wolford around for another season. The move is an obvious one as he has ties to new offensive coordinator Liam Coen after playing under him in Los Angeles for three total seasons (2019-20, 2022).
Buccaneers Boosting Offensive Line With Addition Of Former Philadelphia Eagles Starter
Wolford signed with Tampa Bay last summer and joined a quarterback room that included Mayfield and former second-round pick Kyle Trask. He began the season on the practice squad before being promoted to the active roster in October. Wolford didn't end up attempting a pass while sitting as the third signal-caller on the depth chart.
The Florida native went undrafted in 2018 and began his professional career with the New York Jets. He spent a season in the AAF with the Arizona Hotshots, leading the league in touchdown passes and carving a path back to the NFL. Wolford was signed by the Los Angeles Rams to backup Jared Goff in 2019 and ended up sticking in that role when the team traded for Mathew Stafford.
Wolford sat behind Stafford in 2021 when the Rams made a run to Super Bowl LVI and defeated the Cincinnati Bengals. He appeared in three games throughout the season, completing 1/4 passes for five yards and an interception. During his time with the Rams, he completed a total of 61/104 passes for 626 yards with one touchdown to five interceptions in seven appearances, with four starts.
A record-setting performer at Wake Forest, Wolford will bring a veteran presence in the room and a knowledge of the system.
Coen was Wolford's quarterbacks coach in 2020 and offensive coordinator in 2022.
