Fingers have been crossed over the last 24 hours in Tampa after Buccaneers first-round pick Calijah Kancey went down with a non-contact injury during a training camp practice on Sunday. Kancey came up grabbing at his calf while trying to sidestep during a drill and briefly consulted with trainers before being carted off the field.

Head coach Todd Bowles said the rookie was set to undergo an MRI on Monday. It seems that Kancey has dodged a serious injury.

According to the Tampa Bay Times' Rick Stroud, Kancey's MRI didn't reveal anything serious. He might spend some time on the sidelines while getting back to full health but is expected to return by the beginning of the regular season.

This is the best news that the Buccaneers could've gotten with a rash of calf injuries happening around the league. Kancey was one of the standouts on the defensive side of the ball during the first couple of practices. The team would love for him to progress quicker than expected to get back in the lineup for a preseason game.

Tampa Bay selected Kancey with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year/$14.5 million with the franchise in June. Kancey totaled 91 tackles, 34.5 tackles for loss, 16 sacks, one forced fumble, and three pass deflections during his time with the Panthers. He was named a unanimous All-American and the ACC's Defensive Player of the Year following the 2022 season.
