Why Jameis Winston is still the Bucs' QB of the future

New coaching staff doesn't care about his previous turnover-prone seasons.

Jameis Winston's first four seasons in the NFL were full of big numbers, both good and bad.

He was the first player in league history to begin his career with back-to-back 4,000-yard seasons. He also leads the NFL in turnovers since entering the league as the No. 1 overall pick back in 2015. 

Guess who doesn't care about either of those things? 

Bucs head coach Bruce Arians.

"The last four, whatever years, I don't care," Arians said Wednesday. "I'm only judging you on what you're doing today, with us. Play quarterback the way we want it played, and he's doing a heck of a job at it. I don't care about the past."

If all Arians is judging with Winston is what he's done this season, it's easy to see why the Bucs' new head coach is so confident in his quarterback. Through four games, Winston is averaging career-highs in yards per game, QB rating, yards per attempt, yards per completion and touchdown percentage. 

After struggling in Week 1 with a trio of interceptions, including a pair of pick-sixes, Winston has tossed eight touchdown passes to just two interceptions over the past three weeks, leading the Bucs to victory in two of those games.

While many Bucs fans questioned whether or not this would be Winston's final season in Tampa Bay after the consistency with which he turned the ball over throughout his career, it appears the new management views him as a 25-year-old rookie with tons of starting experience under his belt, and still loads of potential.

When the Bucs eventually sign Winston to a long-term extension, nobody should be surprised.
