Detroit Lions’ C.J. Gardner-Johnson Makes Himself Look Foolish Responding to Baker Mayfield

Detroit DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Buccaneers' QB Baker Mayfield continue their back-and-forth affair leading up to the team's Divisional round matchup in the playoffs.

Trash talk leading up to a playoff game?

We have plenty of it as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers get ready to head North to take on the Detroit Lions in the Divisional round of the NFL playoffs.

Early this week, former Saints' and current Lions' defensive back, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, made comments stating in short that the Buccaneers would be a great group IF you gave them a good quarterback - a slight to Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield.

The comments made by Gardner-Johnson are nothing new as the defensive back has made headlines before when speaking about the Buccaneers' in the past during his time with the Saints and by the time Mayfield spoke to the media after Wednesday's walk-through practice he was ready to respond.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson Takes Shot at Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Ahead of Detroit Lions Matchup

When posed with what he thought of CJGJ's comments, Mayfield responded subtly stating that he must not have watched much film since he mentioned injured Bucs' WR Russell Gage and that he should probably do a little more film study.

That seemed to be the end of the back-and-forth quips to one another, but Gardner-Johnson didn't stop following the comments as he took to his X, formerly known as Twitter, to try and set the record straight.

Gardner-Johnson thinking he gave Mayfield props when he clearly insulted him back-handedly, seems on brand.

Trying to backtrack after he was the one who initially went after Mayfield is also laughable.

Gardner-Johnson has yet to face off against this Buccaneers' team as he missed the first matchup back in Week 6. The Lions' secondary and defense as a whole have had trouble stopping opposing offenses, so if Baker and the Bucs' offense comes in ready to play like they did against the Eagles in the Wild Card round he could be in for a long day against a team that could be good if they had a quarterback.
