Former Bucs' QB Tom Brady Doesn't Agree With Suspension of Steelers' Damontae Kazee
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers' quarterback and all-time great Tom Brady has been pretty vocal recently when it comes to his stance on today's quarterbacks not looking out for their wide receivers' well-being - throwing them into dangerous situations and not getting any of the blame for it.
On Sunday, that same thing reared its' ugly head, this time for the Indianapolis Colts. Almost midway through the second quarter, Colts' quarterback Gardner Minshew launched a pass for star wideout Michael Pittman who dove for the catch before getting absolutely rocked by Pittsburgh Steelers' safety Damontae Kazee.
With Pittman diving for the ball, it made it even more difficult for the safety to try and stop his momentum for the tackle and unfortunately ended in a hard hit that sent Pittman out of the game with a concussion.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Could Land Iconic Head Coach Replacement for Todd Bowles
The league decided to suspend Kazee - not for this hit in particular, but for repeated violations of similar instances - for the rest of the season.
Many who follow the NFL were split on the decision, but for Tom Brady, the suspension/discipline should not only be geared to the defensive player.
In a comment on an Instagram post regarding the situation, Brady hinted at coaching and quarterback IQ as areas that need to improve to help prevent these types of situations from occurring in the future.
"Nobody likes seeing players get hurt. But hard hits happen. QBs should not be throwing the ball in areas where they are exposing their own teammates to these types of hits. Coaches need to coach better, QBs needs to read coverages and throw the ball to the right places and defenders should aim for the right hitting areas. To put the blame on the defense player all the time is just flat out wrong. Need better QB play!! It's not OK QBs to get your WRs hit because of your bad decisions!"
I tend to agree with Brady here. There is only so much a defender can do in certain situations. There should be precautions taken on both sides of the ball without the defender always turning out to be the guy who is punished for instances that sometimes may be out of his control because of a throw made by the opposing offense.
Baker Mayfield Makes It Clear Regarding His Future in Tampa With Buccaneers
It will be interesting to see if the league takes a look at this moving forward, but for now, it appears we will have to finish out the rest of the season with things like this happening.
