Hall of Fame QB Likens Brock Purdy's Recent Struggles to Tom Brady's Early Years

Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner likened San Francisco 49ers' QB Brock Purdy's recent struggles to that of Tom Brady's early years with the New England Patriots.
In this story:

Mr. Irrelevant, or as others know him Brock Purdy, has been a success story for the San Francisco 49ers after taking control of the starting quarterback role for them in the middle of last season.

Purdy finished last season strong after claiming the starting gig and started this season off looking much of the same and even improved. However, in a three-game losing skid, Purdy looked flustered and not himself as he threw five interceptions over that three-game span.

Sure, Purdy wasn't the one solely to blame for the 49ers losing those three games, but when you have the idea floating around about a potential NFL MVP bid through the first five games just to somewhat regress the opinions and narrative about you begin to change.

Purdy still has yet to play a full NFL season, and Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner thinks that people should stay patient with Purdy, not rushing to judgment, and even likens the recent struggles from Purdy to the early days in New England for ex-Buccaneers' quarterback Tom Brady.

“I haven't seen enough to say, ‘[Brock Purdy] is one of those elite guys who can win games with his right arm.' That to me is the final qualifier to be elite or a franchise QB,” Kurt Warner said on the Willard and Dibs Show. “But let's think back to Tom Brady through his first 3, 4, 5 years in the NFL. He was not that guy. He had not checked that box… Eventually there comes a time when you have to prove that you are that guy. If you can't, you become a really good player, but maybe not in the elite category.”

“All these guys that were great eventually in their career, they weren't necessarily that guy early on,” Warner said. “Let's give Brock some time. He's done great things in the short period of time in this system, things that make you go, ‘Man, this kid is a really good QB.' Doesn't mean he's a finished product. Doesn't mean he's shown us everything we need to know about if he can be a franchise guy or be an elite QB in this league, but let's give him time to do that!” via 95.7 The Game.

Placing high praise and then immediately taking that away and calling for him not to be the guy is premature in all senses especially since Purdy has only played in 13 regular season games as a starting quarterback. The likes of Brady, Manning, Montana, and so on all took their lumps early on in their careers and had to develop over time.

If Purdy can block out all the extra noise that surrounds him he could be one of those guys who can develop and become one of the greats at the position as long as he and the 49ers are both patient in welcoming the development process.
