Hall of Fame Quarterback Delivers High Praise For Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield
Tampa Bay Buccaneers' quarterback Baker Mayfield had the best season of his career in 2023 with the Bucs.
After being drafted as the No. 1 overall pick by the Cleveland Browns, Mayfield led them to the playoffs only to be disposed of by that same Browns organization following his injury and them proceeding to want to go in another direction with Deshaun Watson. Baker then split a season with the Carolina Panthers (didn't end well) and the Los Angeles Rams before signing with the Buccaneers this past offseason on a team-friendly, prove-it deal with the hopes of resurrecting his career.
He did just that.
Where Do The Buccaneers Go If Dave Canales Leaves For The Carolina Panthers?
Mayfield led the Buccaneers to their third consecutive NFC South title during the regular season, completing 64.3% of his passes for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions. Baker carried over his momentum from the end of the regular season into the playoffs leading the Bucs to a win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round.
Despite losing the next week to the Detroit Lions, Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers consider the season a win as there were not many expectations surrounding this Bucs' team from the get-go.
Former Super Bowl Champion and Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner discussed the Buccaneers' season and praised Baker Mayfield for what he was able to accomplish over the course of it during an episode on YouTube where he breaks down game tape.
“There is so many good things that Baker is doing. I love it, and love watching it. Got thrown away a little bit by the last couple teams he was on, got a bad rap I thought in Cleveland. Should probably still be in Cleveland, he’d have that team in the playoffs as well. But I love that he bounces back he’s got great confidence in himself, believes in himself and it showed this year, and I hope it turns into a big contract.”
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Have 'A Lot of Tough Decisions' Coming This Offseason
That is high praise coming from a legend and two-time NFL MVP. Warner believes that Baker's play this season has garnered enough respect for it to earn him a big contract. That belief is widespread, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers should do everything in their power to retain Baker.
