The season is just beginning but injuries are already starting to pile up across the league. That has teams around the NFL evaluating potential replacements on the free-agent market.

On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts brought in veteran running back Ronald Jones for a workout. The former second pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018 has been bouncing around the NFL since moving on from the team in 2021. He spent a year with the Kansas City Chiefs and was signed by the Dallas Cowboys over the offseason.

However, Jones was suspended for two games over the summer for violating the NFL's PED policy. That paved the way for younger running backs to step up on the roster behind star Tony Pollard, leading to his eventual release from the Cowboys without even playing a snap.

Jones also worked out for the Baltimore Ravens earlier this month. The team eventually chose to sign Kenyon Drake, leaving him still looking for a home. There's a chance that things could work out between Jones and the Colts.

After all, there's no guarantee that star running back Jonathan Taylor returns to the team at this point in time. He's eligible to come off the PUP list following Indianapolis's game this upcoming weekend. Veteran Zack Moss has handled the bulk of the duties in his absence, recording 48 carries for 210 yards and a touchdown.

Behind him, the Colts have Trey Sermon (5 carries, 17 yards) and Trey Funk (2 carries, 10 yards) on the active roster. Adding Jones could provide the team with a more reliable second option in the short term to take some of the load off of Moss.

Jones has totaled 505 attempts for 2,244 rushing yards with 19 touchdowns during his time with the Buccaneers. He only recorded 17 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown in his lone year with the Chiefs, winning his second championship as a member of the Super Bowl LVII team.

The 26-year-old's best season at the professional level came in 2020 when Tampa Bay went on a run to win Super Bowl LV. He rushed 192 times for 978 yards and seven rushing touchdowns while catching 28 passes for 165 yards and another score.
