Mike Evans Offers His Thoughts On The Current State Of The Buccaneers' Quarterback Battle
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are about to kick their quarterback battle up a notch when training camp begins later this month. The franchise will have a new face behind center for the first time in three years after Tom Brady stepped away from the sport for good earlier this offseason.
That has veteran Baker Mayfield and former second-round pick Kyle Trask grappling for the opportunity to replace Brady in pewter and red. Star wide receiver Mike Evans is keeping a close eye on the competition as he looks to push his NFL record streak of 1,000+ receiving-yard seasons to begin a career to ten.

Evans held his annual youth camp in Galveston, Texas at the end of June. While speaking to reporters during the event, he offered his thoughts on where things stand between Mayfield and Trask.
“Kyle’s improved a lot,” Evans said to KRPC2 Houston's Ari Alexander. “I’m really impressed with what I’ve seen with Baker. Whoever the quarterback will be, I’m positive they’re going to make the right choice and we’re going to win some games.”
Mayfield is the perceived favorite for the job after signing with the franchise in March. There's hope that he'll flourish under new offensive coordinator Dave Canales in 2023, who led Geno Smith to a career year with the Seahawks. Mayfield struggled during the end of his tenure with the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers but found his footing with the Los Angeles Rams.
Trask, on the other hand, hasn't had much of an opportunity to showcase his abilities since being drafted by Tampa Bay in 2021. He's spent the majority of his time as a reserve behind Brady and former backup Blaine Gabbert. Trask did completed 3/9 passes for 22 yards during the first appearance of his career in the Buccaneers' loss to Atlanta in the regular-season finale.
Regardless of who ends up winning the quarterback battle, there will be plenty of skill players at their disposal. Outside of Evans, the Buccaneers boast talents such as All-Pro wide receiver Chris Godwin, wide receiver Russell Gage, promising running back Rachaad White, and tight end Cade Otton.
