Unfortunately, there may be more in this story to tell, and not in a good way. According to a report from the Tampa Bay Times, the Tampa Police are in the process of conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Williams' death.
Multiple people informed the publication that they were concerned that visitors brought Williams unprescribed drugs, namely Percocet, while he was in the hospital. The list of people fearing this to be the case include the grandmother and mother of his daughter as well as three of his close friends.
The Tampa Police Department informed the Times via email that, "the nature of the crime is under review."
According to Chris Wilkerson, spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office, Williams' cause of death "is pending further study."
Williams originally suffered a head injury on August 18. In the weeks following the accident, he began to suffer from loss of vision and partial paralysis. During his stay in the hospital, he was diagnosed with brain lesions and underwent spinal surgery while also being forced to grapple with a staph infection.
During the course of his time in the intensive care unit, it's believed that he was provided drugs that were combined along with the medication that he was receiving for treatment. It's possible that could've been fatal after Williams went into respiratory arrest and cardiac arrest due to low oxygen levels.
The investigation will hopeful reveal any potential wrongful acts leading up to Williams' passing on September 12.
The 6-foot-1, 212-pound wide receiver was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He spent his first four years with the franchise and was named to the PWFA-All Rookie Team after recording 65 catches for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns to begin his career with the Buccaneers.
Tampa Bay ultimately chose to trade Williams to the Buffalo Bills in 2014. He ended up struggling with injuries and was released by the franchise prior to the conclusion of the regular season. Williams was suspended for the first six weeks of the 2015 season. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs the following year but did not make the team during final roster cuts.
Williams totaled 223 catches for 3,089 yards and 26 touchdowns during his professional career. He spent his college career at Syracuse and was named Second-Team All-Big East in 2007.
