Tampa Bay Buccaneers To Face Detroit Lions In Divisional Round
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have done what many around the country thought was impossible back in August. Matched up against one of the Super Bowl favorites in the opening round of the playoffs, the Buccaneers showed up with a dominant effort against the Philadelphia Eagles to pull off a massive upset.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield led the way on offense as he compiled one of the best passing games in franchise history. He completed 22/36 passes for 307 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Mayfield became the first Buccaneer signal-caller to throw for over 300 yards and three scores in a playoff game. He connected on a 56-yard touchdown to Trey Palmer and a 44-yard score to David Moore.
The Buccaneers are one of the final four teams alive in the NFC. Tampa Bay will be dodging a trip to San Francisco after Green Bay's surprising win over Dallas. The result means that head coach Todd Bowles and his battle-hardened group will be hitting the road to take on the Detroit Lions. The contest is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 21, and will be televised on NBC.
Baker Mayfield Gets Massive Pay Day if Buccaneers Win NFC South
The Lions are coming off a 24-23 victory against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night. Detroit built a 21-10 lead in the second quarter but was held to just three points in the second half. A strong effort on defense, particularly in the red zone, provided just enough for head coach Dan Campbell to secure the franchise's first playoff victory in 32 years.
This will be the second straight week to begin the postseason that the Buccaneers have an opportunity for revenge. Detroit defeated Tampa Bay back in October, spoiling a Creamsicle game in Raymond James Stadium. Quarterback Jared Goff racked up over 350 passing yards and two touchdowns while Mayfield and the offense on the other sideline were held to a season-low six points in a 20-6 defeat.
You can bet that Tampa Bay will enter this contest with a point to prove. The Buccaneers have won six of their last seven games with both sides of the ball getting into a rhythm. Monday night was particularly special as it provided the franchise with its first playoff win without Tom Brady in over 22 years.
The Buccaneers will try to keep the magic going for another week. They are 5-4 away from home while the Lions were 6-2 in the regular season (and 1-0 in the postseason) at Ford Field.
