Undrafted QB Set to Join Buccaneers' Rookie Minicamp for Tryout

The Buccaneers are bringing in a quarterback prospect to their rookie minicamp.
In this story:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn't draft a quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft as many had anticipated. Instead, it appears that the Bucs will move ahead with the quarterback battle between Kyle Trask and Baker Mayfield to see who will become the team's next starting quarterback sans Tom Brady.

However, the Buccaneers will still need to find a third quarterback to help fill out their QB room in case, god forbid, either Trask and/or Mayfield get injured during the offseason training or the season. Since the front office decided not to draft a quarterback in the NFL draft, the Bucs will have to do their due diligence in finding a serviceable option for their third QB position.

The Bucs have recently held four quarterbacks - one of which was delegated to the practice squad - so ultimately they could end up finding two quarterbacks in the undrafted pool of players.

One quarterback that fits this narrative for the Buccaneers and who has already accepted an invite to the Bucs' rookie minicamp is former Georgia Southern quarterback Kyle Vantrease.

Vantrease spent the first five seasons of his collegiate career with the Buffalo Bulls before transferring to Georgia Southern for his final year of college eligibility. During his lone season at Georgia Southern, Vantrease was able to put together a complete season that saw him nearly reach the totals he put up through his five seasons in Buffalo.

According to Pro Football Network, Vantrease does an outstanding job at commanding the offense, but struggles with his accuracy. This past season he completed 370/603 passes for 4,247 yards with 27 touchdowns to 16 interceptions. He also scored three touchdowns on the ground.

"Strengths: Four-year starter who began his career at Buffalo and is coming off an incredibly productive season. Patient in the pocket, takes the safe underneath outlet, and does an outstanding job commanding the offense. Remains poised under the rush, puts touch on throws, and displays speed on short and intermediate passes. Puts the deep throw in front of targets and lets them run to the ball. Possesses enough mobility to get outside the pocket and make throws on the move.

Weaknesses: Must improve his pass placement, as receivers are consistently adjusting backward to grab errant throws. Stares down the primary target and is very slow in moving his head. Puts the ball up for grabs and makes questionable throws. Tossed 16 interceptions last year.

Overall: Vantrease is a nice-sized pocket passer who completed 61% of his throws for more than 4,200 yards last year. He must improve his decision-making and field vision, but he has enough upside to get practice-squad consideration."

Bringing in a quarterback like Vantrease to helm either the third quarterback slot on the roster or serve as the Bucs' practice squad QB will help the Buccaneers sure up a position that is still rather unknown.
