Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon Blasted by NFL Fans
TEMPE -- Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon just finished up his Wednesday media availability with reporters. As always, Gannon was a mixture of upbeat/positive while also keeping information tight.
He still won't reveal who Arizona's starting quarterback will be in Week 1 when the team battles the Washington Commanders. He deemed the secret necessary in hopes of preserving a "competitive advantage" to keep the guessing game between Josh Dobbs and Clayton Tune humming.
Gannon - previously the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles - arrived this offseason with a bit of controversy after staying in Arizona to interview for the job after losing Super Bowl LVII. Gannon never spoke to Eagles media after the loss and eventually faced the music at the NFL Combine, where Philadelphia reporters took advantage of his podium availability in Indianapolis to bombard him about the loss.
On draft night, the Cardinals and Eagles settled a tampering probe for Gannon's hire with the team swapping 2023 third-round picks after Arizona self-reported a violation of the league's no-contact policy when GM Monti Ossenfort called Gannon two days prior to the Super Bowl, a no-no since Gannon was still actively coaching for another team.
Then, the initial videos of Gannon interacting with players came. Fans made fun of his awkward first impressions:
The Cardinals' latest episode of Flight Plan - a video series that shows behind the scenes footage - captured a motivational speech by Gannon at the beginning of training camp, which was also torn to shreds by NFL fans.
The Athletic recently published a long-form interview done with Gannon where he discussed everything from Kyler Murray to being surprised by Nick Sirrianni's coaching ability and even admitting sometimes he'll re-watch the film from his Super Bowl loss - among other noteworthy topics.
Readers of the article weren't impressed.
"This is not going to end well," is the most-liked comment on the post.
"The more Gannon talks, the more he reveals himself to be a complete jackass," said one reader, with another chiming in saying, "Came here to say this. Read this article to see if my opinion of him changed…it just massively confirmed that his guy is a complete a-hole."
Another read, "Cool article. Imma put 50 on him for first coach fired."
There were plenty more colorful comments, but it's very clear a vast majority of the outside world believes Gannon will ultimately fail here in the desert.
