The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup is fully underway, and the Arizona Cardinals have some ties to the United States Women's National Team in their attempt to snag an unprecedented third consecutive trophy.

The Americans got their campaign off to a strong start in their 3-0 win over Vietnam to begin the group stage.

Forward Sophia Smith scored two goals and assisted the other in the crucial win to grab an opening three points - which was also her first appearance in the World Cup.

Smith is the girlfriend of Cardinals rookie receiver Michael Wilson. They met each other during their college time at Stanford.

Another familiar name for Cardinals fans is Julie Ertz, who has won the prior two World Cups with the USWNT and has typically been a staple in the lineup before missing time due to birthing a child and rehabbing a knee injury. Typically playing as a midfielder, Ertz aligned as a centerback and helped the United States keep a clean sheet.

Ertz is married to Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz, with the couple welcoming child Madden to the world last August. She is also a native of Mesa, AZ.

Their next match will be on Wednesday, July 26 when they face Netherlands.
