Cardinals Named One of Worst Drafting Teams in NFL
We're less than 20 days away from the 2023 NFL Draft, and the Arizona Cardinals are preparing for a few different scenarios.
Holding the keys to the No. 3 pick, the Cardinals are heavily expected to move down as their rebuild leaves them with plenty of holes to fill. Arizona looks to take advantage of a quarterback heavy top of the order and acquire some serious ammo.
Whether they pick at No. 3 or somewhere else in the order, Arizona is slated to pick somebody in the first-round.
Pro Football Focus says they're one of the worst teams in the league in that aspect, pegging them as one of five teams in the "worst" category of picking since 2014.
Cardinals Named One of Worst Drafting Teams in NFL
After going through the best five teams (Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers, Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers), the Cardinals joined the Las Vegas Raiders, New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears in the bottom tier.
"I don’t want to overlook how much credit Arizona should get for drafting Kyler Murray No 1 overall just a year after it spent the 10th overall pick on Josh Rosen. It took a lot of courage to effectively trash their original plan and not buy into the time you are supposed to give a top draft pick at quarterback," said Sam Monson.
"The Cardinals correctly evaluated that Murray was a far superior prospect to Rosen, and they weren’t going to get a chance like that very often, so they made a difficult call. Murray has flashed elite potential, but the wheels have started to come off that wagon a little bit lately, even before his season-ending injury last year.
"Haason Reddick is the other top player they drafted, but they spent so long trying to make him into something that he isn’t that they barely got any benefit from it. Reddick already has more pressures for his career (131) than he did in four years in the desert (113)."
The Cardinals traded last year's first-round pick for WR Marquise Brown and have drafted the following players in recent memory.
2021: LB Zaven Collins
2020: LB Isaiah Simmons
2019: QB Kyler Murray
2018: QB Josh Rosen
2017: EDGE Haason Reddick
2016: DI Robert Nkemdiche
2015: OT D.J. Humphries
The good news? The main man in charge of those drafts (general manager Steve Keim) is no longer in power. New head honcho in town Monti Ossenfort hails from strong drafting organizations in Tennessee and New England, so there's hope the ship can turn in the right direction beginning in 2023.
