Cardinals-Giants Against The Spread Picks

The Arizona Cardinals are underdogs to the New York Giants. Will they cover?
In this story:

You know what they say? Good teams win, and great teams cover.

The Arizona Cardinals covered their seven-point spread in Week 1 despite losing while the New York Giants fell flat on their face in a 40-0 loss.

Now, both teams are looking to find their first offensive touchdown - and win - of the season at State Farm Stadium for Week 2's matchup.

Arizona enters their first home game of the season as +4.5 point underdogs, though they began the week around six points depending on the book.

Will they cover?

The Ringer

Sheil Kapadia: "Allow me to be the 400th person to tell you that keeping Daniel Jones in the game in the fourth quarter of that 40-0 loss to the Cowboys on Sunday night was absurd. Brian Daboll wanted something positive to happen for Jones? C’mon now. Jones was getting crushed. It’s a long season. Can you imagine the discourse if one of those late-game hits resulted in an injury to the quarterback they just signed to a big deal this offseason? Be smart and take care of your players. That should’ve been an easy decision.

"As for the Cardinals, they looked surprisingly competent during a road loss at Washington.

"A nugget that I’m leaning on here: Since 1993, teams that suffer 40-point losses in Week 1 are 11-3-1 against the spread the following week. OK, I made that up. Still, I like the Giants to bounce back.

"The pick: Giants (-6)"

The Athletic

Vic Tafur: "We’re also going to assume the Commanders took the Cardinals lightly. Arizona still didn’t score an offensive touchdown in that game and is the perfect get-well gift for the Giants. The Cardinals’ pass rush and secondary will seem like a vacation for Daniel Jones after he was running for his life against the Cowboys. He was pressured on 28 of his 42 dropbacks (66.7 percent), the highest rate of any Week 1 QB and the highest in any start of his career.

"The pick: Giants"

Bleacher Report

Wes O'Donnell: "Good grief, Giants. When this season's schedule was released, this matchup screamed 'trap game' assuming Brian Daboll's team actually took the field in its Week 1 tilt with Dallas. That's out the window after Big Blue suffered a historically disappointing defeat. Daboll and the Giants aren't just backed into a corner here; they're already fighting for their lives, and it's only Week 2.

"This isn't a trap game anymore. This is a must-win game for the Giants—a win-or-go-home game—a season-defining opportunity against arguably the least talented football team in the NFL. They must right the ship in dominant fashion, covering the spread, because on the other side of this matchup is a short week Thursday night game against the current Super Bowl favorite (per DraftKings) San Francisco 49ers.

"The Giants will win and cover because they simply must do so, or they can start looking at the 2024 draft class."

Yahoo!

Frank Schwab: "It's a little high for a road favorite, and maybe the Giants aren't very good. They certainly looked bad in Week 1. I'm willing to give them one more chance, and bank on them coming back strong after being embarrassed."
