Four Potential Trade Destinations for Cardinals Safety Budda Baker
The Arizona Cardinals have the displeasure of having to trade away one of their best players, Budda Baker, following a trade request.
It was anything but something the team was hoping to do as they enter a rebuilding era, but between wanting a new contract and likely wanting a chance to win a championship, the writing appears to be on the wall for Baker to depart.
Thankfully for the Cardinals, there should be plenty of suitors for his services.
The five-time Pro Bowl safety is just 27 years old and is arguably one of the top players at his position across the entire league. Even for a safety, there will be teams lining up to acquire his services.
I believe that 90% of the NFL should be interested in adding Baker, but of the 31 teams who should be calling the Cardinals, these four teams stand out the most as the most obvious landing spots for the safety.
I do not have any trade packages here, but a second-round pick seems like a good bargaining chip, for what it's worth.
Anyways, here are the four teams who make the most sense to trade for Baker:
Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars were quite the surprise in 2022. The team started off the year 3-7 before winning six of their last seven games and subsequently winning the AFC South and going to the playoffs for the first time since 2017. With Trevor Lawrence at the helm, their window is wide open to go for a championship and they should capitalize on it.
While safety isn't a dire need for the Jaguars with solid play from Rayshawn Jenkins and Andre Cisco, adding a top-tier talent like Baker would be hard to pass up. Baker is the kind of difference-maker this defense needs to take a step toward championship caliber. Baker can elevate young talent like Devin Lloyd and Tyson Campbell to reach their full potential.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins are clearly going all in on their window while Tua Tagovailoa is on his rookie contract. The team has been hyper-aggressive in the trade market in particular, adding Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb, and most recently Jalen Ramsey within the last calendar year alone. Hence, the Dolphins make as much sense as anyone else to go for Baker.
The team added Ramsey already to line up across Pro Bowler Xavien Howard and adding Baker to play next to rising star Jevon Holland should be just as enticing. A secondary featuring those four would give the Dolphins a serious claim toward owning the top secondary in the league.
Green Bay Packers
The Packers are a weird team that we aren't completely sure what to do with them. Aaron Rodgers is on the way out via trade (eventually) and Jordan Love will become the new starting quarterback, but does that mean they are a year (or more) away from competing again? I doubt that they feel that way.
The defense for the Packers has potential but needs some more youth added. Adrian Amos is gone and Darnell Savage has yet to arrive, so placing Baker in this secondary makes a lot of sense from the standpoint of adding talent, upgrading the position, and simply getting better across the board.
Pittsburgh Steelers
During what was supposed to be a down year for the Steelers, Mike Tomlin got a 9-8 season out of his squad and there's little reason to believe they won't be right back to compete for the playoffs once again. However, if they want to do so in the loaded AFC, they'll need to improve the backend of their defense.
Minkah Fitzpatrick can be argued as the best safety in the league, but he needs a running mate. Why not match him up with another safety who can be argued as the best in the league? A duo of Fitzpatrick and Baker would give the Steelers one of the most dynamic safety duos in the league and would go a long way to making the secondary a strength for the team.
