Would Cardinals Draft QB, Trade Kyler Murray?
The Arizona Cardinals still have plenty to work through this offseason, but their quarterback situation is fairly handled.
Just last offseason, the Cardinals handed a massive contract extension to Kyler Murray while also securing their second and third spots with Colt McCoy and David Blough as Murray recovers from ACL surgery.
There's plenty of positions the Cardinals can upgrade as their rebuild gets underway, yet quarterback falls fairly low on that list.
However, that hasn't stopped speculation from brewing on the possibility of Murray being moved at some point within the next few years - and Arizona being in prime position to take a quarterback at No. 3 in this year's NFL draft hasn't exactly silenced those thoughts.
Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon went through the possibility after conceding that it was unlikely the Cardinals would move on from Murray this offseason.
"However, Murray struggled last season before suffering a torn ACL, and his work ethic has come under fire (although some teammates have pushed back on that)," he said.
"Still, the Cardinals could save $3 million against the 2023 cap by trading Murray after June 1, per Spotrac. His ongoing recovery from the ACL tear might throw a wrench into that, but the fact even a 2024 trade would create significant cap savings for the Cardinals ($38.9 million) could cause them to consider taking C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young or Anthony Richardson with the No. 3 overall pick.
"Arizona could take one of those guys now and then trade Murray for a slew of 2024 draft capital this summer or fall. Although the Cardinals aren't expected to be a serious contender in 2023, that would make them one of the NFL's most intriguing squads in 2024."
It's certainly an interesting prospect to consider. Arizona's new regime has no ties to Murray and if the Cardinals are indeed as bad as they appear to be for 2023, Arizona could again be in prime position to take one of the top quarterback prospects in 2024 in Caleb Williams or Drake Maye.
Murray continues to be a polarizing figure on and off the field, and though the ink is still probably wet on the extension he signed last offseason, all options just might be on the table for the Cardinals as their rebuild gets underway.
