Cardinals Free Agent Target Could Come at 'Massive Price'
ARIZONA -- The Arizona Cardinals have plenty of cash to play with as free agency nears around the corner, and one potential target could come with quite the hefty price tag.
The Cardinals' 33 team sacks last season leaves room for an upgrade along the defensive front, and who better to target than the massive name of Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Danielle Hunter, who is set to hit free agency at 29-years-old.
Hunter isn't quite one of the elite players at his position, though his production (when healthy) isn't matched by many.
The same can be said for his reported price tag.
More from two ESPN insiders:
Dan Graziano: "Hunter, who had 16.5 sacks last season and 27 total over the past two years, could be the top edge rusher on the market and would likely generate interest from multiple teams. The Vikings' attention has been focused on finding out whether they can keep Cousins, but he's not the only significant piece of business they have to address."
Jeremy Fowler: "Yeah, not as many numbers floated around Indy as usual, but it's safe to say teams are expecting Hunter to be in -- or at least searching for -- a pretty massive price range, something well north of $20 million per year. And the production might just justify it: Hunter has averaged 14 sacks over his past four healthy seasons."
Spotrac has Hunter's market value flat at $20 million per season.
Now, the Cardinals aren't exactly strapped for cash. In terms of effective cap space - which subtracts what the team would use to sign their draft class - Arizona sits at $45.6 million per OverTheCap, good enough for eighth in the NFL.
We'll see if Arizona believes they're just a few pieces away when free agency starts in just over a week.
