Cardinals Sack Leader Chandler Jones Released by Raiders After Arrest
Former Arizona Cardinals OLB and current Las Vegas Raider Chandler Jones has reportedly been released after being arrested by Vegas police earlier this week.
More from ESPN's Adam Schefter:
NFL Media's Andrew Groover reported Jones was arrested for violating two restraining orders:
"Raiders DE Chandler Jones is currently in custody at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada for two violations of domestic temporary restraining order and is expected to be released later today. Jones was arrested at 11pm last night," wrote Groover. Jones was reportedly cooperative with police.
The arrest came a week after the Raiders placed Jones on the Non-football illness list. Jones has yet to play this season after posting that he no longer wanted to play for the organization on social media, and has seemingly spiraled since.
The root of Jones' tirades on social media is unknown, though Jones has said some pretty strong things about Josh McDaniels, Robert Kraft and Aaron Hernandez among other topics.
Both the Raiders and NFLPA previously tried to reach out to Jones for help but he's refused both times, posting personal information such as name and phone numbers for the contact person each organization sent on social media.
The NFL put out the following (short) statement on Jones:
“We have been closely monitoring the matter and have been in constant communication with the Raiders.”
The Raiders also released their own statement after the arrest:
Jones - 33 years old - is Arizona's all-time sack leader after defeating the previous record of 67, which was done back in 2021.
Jones played in Arizona from 2016-21 before hitting free agency and signing a three-year, $51 million deal with the Raiders in 2022. He is now a free agent again.
According to ESPN's news story:
"As a result of his release, the Raiders are subject to approximately $12 million in dead money against the salary cap both in 2023 and 2024, as the team restructured Jones' deal in March to create additional cap space.
"It is unclear whether the Raiders will attempt to recoup any of the previously paid money to Jones that would be permissible as a result of him being placed on the NFI list.
"Jones posted bond Friday and is due back in court Dec. 4, according to Clark County court records."
