Cardinals Told Josh Dobbs He Wasn't Getting Traded

Former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Joshua Dobbs was told by Jonathan Gannon he wasn't being traded.

ARIZONA -- If anybody knows the life of a journeyman quarterback in the NFL, it's Joshua Dobbs.

Dobbs - acquired by the Cardinals prior to the regular season - has switched teams six times since the beginning of 2022.

He himself admitted he knows all too well about packing up and moving throughout the country, and that was again the case at the league's trade deadline when Dobbs was moved to his current team in the Minnesota Vikings.

It was a bit of a surprising move, and that includes Dobbs, who recently did an interview and says he was told specifically by Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon he wasn't going to get traded.

"So I'm in Arizona. Last Sunday we play Baltimore. Game ends, we lose by seven, 31-24. We're in the locker room. JG [Jonathan Gannon] gets off his podium - he does media before I do - and he says I'm starting for the Cardinals in Cleveland the next week," said Dobbs.

"I go to the facility on Monday and JG, the head coach in Arizona, calls me into his office and he says, 'Hey we're going to start Clayton Tune in Cleveland' and this is leading up to Kyler [Murray's] return.

"So I went home, I talked to my agent, just told him about the situation and went to sleep. Woke up Tuesday morning with a text from my agent saying, 'Hey, you could be traded today' and listen to this: when I had my meeting with JG in Arizona, he looked at me in the face and said, 'you're not getting traded, you're not being released, you're going to be here in Arizona'. I was like, OK, cool.

"So then I woke up to that text saying alright the trade deadline's in four hours, you could be traded. You could go to Minnesota or go back to Cleveland. I was like, today's about to be nuts."

"I eat breakfast, I chill. He calls me back at 11 and says 'You're getting traded to Minnesota'. I said OK.

"So then all the emotions of the last 36 hours, whatever was told to you, something different has happened."

Dobbs led the Cardinals to a 1-7 record as a starter. Arizona started Tune the following week and saw the lowest amount of net yards (58) gained offensively since 1955. With Murray's return, Arizona hopes to have steadied the ship at quarterback.

"Came in, battled, he's an ultimate pro. What he did for us and our team, can't thank him enough. Josh is excited to go to Minnesota and go play. We're excited for him," Gannon said following the trade.

Either there was a massive miscommunication from the front office to the coaching staff, or Gannon was simply trying to save face.

Either way, Dobbs has already earned a win in his new role with Minnesota. He replaced an injured Jaren Hall and marched the Vikings to an incredible win on Sunday as a replacement. He's already been announced as the starter for Minnesota's game this week.
