Jim Harbaugh makes important promotion on coaching staff before key offseason

Jim Harbaugh has made an apparent tweak to his Los Angeles Chargers coaching staff this offseason.
The latest development is another change to the coaching staff under breakout coordinator Jesse Minter, too.
According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Harbaugh has promoted defensive assistant Dylan Roney to defensive ends coach.
Roney, 29, was one of several former Michigan Wolverines personnel to follow Harbaugh to the Chargers in 2024. He played a pivotal role in Minter’s top-10 unit that fueled the unexpected playoff berth, including strong seasons from Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa despite each battling injuries at times.

The shift comes ahead of a potentially chaotic offseason for the front seven. Joey Bosa is a prime cut candidate and might not be back, while Khalil Mack is a free agent and won’t necessarily re-up on a new deal, either. Names like Morgan Fox, Tear Tart and Poona Ford are also free agents.
Harbaugh’s defensive coaching group already suffered a “big loss” with safeties coach Chris O’Leary going to Western Michigan. Harbaugh moved quickly, hiring Adam Fuller to fill that spot. Moves like Roney’s promotion haven’t technically been announced via the annual coaching staff reveal yet.
