Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh on Justin Herbert's Skillset, "He Can Make 'Em All"
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has made it clear he's excited to work with quarterback Justin Herbert as he begins his tenure with the Bolts. This is no surprise, as the potential to coach Herbert was what made the Chargers' job one of the most appealing this offseason. With Harbaugh already being known as a strong mentor to his quarterbacks, the pairing between him and Herbert appears to be one of the most exciting.
For his part, Harbaugh knows he has to step up to coach a player like Herbert. “There’s a piece, too, where it’s just like, ‘Hey, am I man enough to coach this guy?’”
Harbaugh revealed at the NFL's owners meeting that one way he has worked to step up for Herbert is he has watched all of Herbert's tape and throws. His top takeaway: Herbert can make all the throws.
Herbert is of course known for his strong arm, which will help add another dimension to Harbaugh and Greg Roman's new offense with the Chargers. A player who has thrown over 5,000 yards and over 30 touchdowns twice in his four-year career, the potential and play-calling opportunities are vast with Herbert at quarterback.
Another factor of Herbert that Harbaugh is excited for is Herbert's team-first mentality and desire to win.
“Getting to know him and just how much it’s about the team and about winning," Harbaugh said, via the Chargers on X. "How much he puts into it, how much he cares about it. There’s that part of him that he wants it to be about the team. Just being able to make that step to winning."
So far, the Chargers have made the playoffs just once with Herbert at quarterback. They of course brought in a consistent winner in Harbaugh to try and change that. With Herbert's talent, there is no reason that the Chargers shouldn't be able to become consistent contenders. Look for Harbaugh to bring that goal to life with Herbert and his new team.
