Should Chargers Make a Run At This Unsigned Second-Round Wide Receiver?
Following longtime receivers Mike Williams and Keenan Allen's departures this offseason, the Bolts possess one of the league's worst receiving rooms.
While it's assumed that they'll spend at least one draft pick (likely their first-rounder) on a receiver, a key personnel group led by a rookie, Quentin Johnston, and an oft-injured Joshua Palmer isn't a recipe for success, especially in a loaded AFC.
For this reason, it makes a lot of sense to make a push at a free-agent wide receiver, with former Bengals wideout Tyler Boyd being a name to look at.
Boyd, 29, has had a solid career playing for both Andy Dalton and Joe Burrow. In 2018 and 2019, he eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark, playing heavily out of the slot.
Over the past couple of years, he's taken a back seat to Cincy's elite receiving corps of Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins but has remained productive. With Higgins often dealing with injuries, Boyd has spent quite a bit of time in the no. two receiver role that he would likely play with the Bolts.
Aside from his production, he's a veteran piece to add to an otherwise young receiver room, and his ability to play out of the slot can (to a small degree) replace that of Keenan Allen's. A short-term deal is definitely in play given his age, and as he's remained unsigned thus far, it's presumed his demand in the market isn't particularly strong, opening the door to the Bolts getting him on a cheaper deal.
