Chargers RB Austin Ekeler's Drop Rate Could Be Leading To Backfield Change
Austin Ekeler, the star running back for the Chargers, hasn't lived up to the expectations set at the beginning of the season. While he kicked off the year with a stellar performance against the Miami Dolphins in Week 1, the rest of the season has been a disappointment. Ekeler's form has taken an unexpected downturn, leaving him a mere shadow of his usual self.
Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, acknowledging Ekeler's lackluster productivity, has announced that backup running back Joshua Kelley will see an increase in snaps in the backfield. One primary concern contributing to this decision is Ekeler's alarming drop rate, a statistic that has raised eyebrows among Chargers insider for ESPN Khris Rhim.
Rhim points out that Ekeler's drop rate is ringing alarm bells, especially given his apparent decline in overall performance.
“But Ekeler has had issues with drops since he returned in Week 5. He has the third-most drops among running backs with 4, and his drop rate of 9.5% is the third-highest among running backs with at least 30 targets, according to TruMedia. Before this season, Ekeler's season high in drops was five in 2021, and his drop rate was never higher than 5.4%.”

The 28-year-old, who had two remarkable seasons in 2021 and 2022, is experiencing a stark contrast in 2023. Ekeler has amassed only 741 scrimmage yards through nine games, five total touchdowns, and three fumbles.
Speculation arises about Ekeler's health, particularly concerning a high ankle sprain. If this isn't the root cause, it seems we are witnessing the real-time decline of a player who was once considered one of the most dynamic in the league.
What was expected to be another standout season for Ekeler has taken an unexpected turn, leaving fans hopeful that this isn't the beginning of the end of his remarkable career.
