Chargers GM Aims For Balance Throughout Roster
The Los Angeles Chargers will be looking to take the AFC West crown for the first time since 2009. Since then, it's been either the Denver Broncos or Kansas City Chiefs taking home the division title.
The Chargers have all the tools necessary to win the division and be a real threat in the AFC, but they have yet to get over the hump. However, everyone within the organization believes they can get it done. The Chargers have been in the hunt, but in recent years the Chiefs have been a massive roadblock for the Bolts.
And those Chiefs will be a force to be reckoned with till at least the end of this decade, which poses the question, should the Chargers build their team to beat the Chiefs? Answer: yes and no, at least according to Chargers' GM Tom Telesco, who wants to beat the Chiefs but won't go all in the beat one team.
“You talk about both because you want to balance it,” said Telesco, entering his 11th season as general manager. “You don't want to be a team that's just building to beat one other team and forget that we got to play the way we think we need to play to win, to beat the other teams in the division and everybody else that we play.”
If the Chargers want to get to where they want to go, they might need to get over the Chiefs to accomplish that; however, they must remember the other teams in their conference.
The Jaguars are up-and-coming, the Bengals are still excellent, the Bills are still a threat, and you still have the Jets, Dolphins, and Ravens as threats in the AFC. There are many other teams that the Chargers will need to beat to make a deep playoff run.
I'm sure LA would love to destroy Kansas City, but that can't be their sole purpose for years to come. A balance is precisely what the Bolts need, and it's great to hear Telesco has that mindset.
The Chargers must be better versions of themselves before trying to beat the defending Super Bowl champions.
