Chargers GM Shuts Down Keenan Allen Trade Rumors
With the Los Angeles Chargers having one of the less ideal cap situations around the NFL, there's been a lot of talk about how they could potentially look to free up some money for the future. Justin Herbert is going to receive his new extension any day now and LA has made it clear that they still hope to retain Austin Ekeler for the future.
Just to come out with a total of $19 million heading into this most recent offseason, LA had to restructure multiple contracts and shift around their priorities that included them parting ways with top LB Drue Tranquill.
And with the Bolts going all in on a young, speedy receiver in the first round of this year's draft with Quentin Johnston, some interesting rumors started floating around surrounding one of LA's longest-tenured pieces.
Keenan Allen has been the Chargers' number one option at WR for a number of seasons now but certain individuals thought LA was looking too replace him with their new TCU product.
Allen has only ever suited up for the Chargers during his ten seasons in the NFL so these rumors probably never held much weight but Tom Telesco made sure to shut down the trade talks nonetheless.
“Keenan Allen, to me, he’s our Andre Reed. He’s our Charlie Joiner,” Telesco said on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football.” “He’s an incredible football player. We have a great quarterback and we need weapons around him. There’s never been any thought of that.”(Via NESN)
Telesco also detailed exactly how important Allen is to LA's offense.
“He’s with us,” Telesco said, “and between him and Mike Williams and Josh Palmer, we think that’s a great three receivers for our quarterback. We got Austin Ekeler at running back. We have an offensive line that can protect. So those are key weapons we need for our quarterback. We’re thrilled with Keenan.”
