Chargers News: Austin Ekeler Misses Out On Major Money After Season Finale
From top to bottom, the 2023 season was a nightmare for your Los Angeles Chargers. Nothing seemed to go right for a multitude of Bolts, especially for their star running back Austin Ekeler.
Ekeler's 2023 season was the worst in his career, whether it had to do with his right ankle sprain or flat-out poor play week in and week out. Although the Bolts were eliminated from playoff contention after their Week 16 loss to the Buffalo Bills, Ekeler still had a chance to make his season worthwhile.
If Ekeler had finished the 2023 season with 1,125 scrimmage yards, he would've earned himself an extra $100,000. Unfortunately, for the 28-year-old, he didn't come close, ending the season with 1064 total scrimmage yards.
Prior to Week 18, Austin needed 110 yards to get 1,125 yards. He finished the game with 49 scrimmage yards, 11 on the ground, and 38 through the air.
That was the kind of season for Ekeler. Week 1 was as good a start as anyone can have. The former undrafted rookie finished with 117 rushing yards and 47 receiving yards. After that, he suffered a high ankle sprain, causing him to miss the next three games.
However, he couldn't find his groove after that, as he only reached over 100 scrimmage yards three other times in the season.
It was a disappointing season all around. He didn't receive his incentive, and now he will look for some big money as an unrestricted free agent.
