Chargers News: Bolts Sign QB Off Patriots Practice Squad
Your Los Angeles Chargers have just added some signal calling firepower, in light of Easton Stick's lackluster showing against the Las Vegas Raiders Thursday -- and Justin Herbert's season-ending finger fracture surgery.
A source informs Tom Pelissero of The NFL Network that LA has inked Patriots practice squad quarterback Will Grier to a deal. Pelissero notes that this is officially the first roster move for interim Bolts general manager JoJo Wooden. Wooden, of course, was promoted after team owner Dean Spanos fired 11-year GM Tom Telesco last week.
As Chris Hayre of KCAL News observes, Grier previously served under now-Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore when both were with the Dallas Cowboys.
Grier, 28, was selected with the 100th pick out of West Virginia in the 2019 NFL draft. The 6'3" vet was an All-Big 12 Second-Teamer while with West Virginia. He's played sparingly at the next level, having notched 228 total passing yards and 22 rushing yards in regular season games, along with four interceptions and no touchdowns.
Will he compete with Stick for the LA starting gig, along with current primary backup Max Duggan? Or will interim head coach Giff Smith, ahem, Stick it out for the time being? We'll find out on Saturday, when Los Angeles faces off against the 7-6 Buffalo Bills.
