Chargers News: Bolts Surprisingly Waive Veteran DT
The Los Angeles Chargers might be looking to fix their cap space heading into the 2024 season a bit early.
The team announced that veteran DT Sebastian Joseph-Day has officially been waived. This comes as a very surprising move considering his leadership and being team captain.
Joseph-Day started 14 games this season and has logged 3 sacks.
Cutting Joseph-Day might just be a cap move that the team is looking to deal with right now instead of waiting. Cutting him creates $11.5 million in dead money while taking $2.5 million against the cap.
Joseph-Day had just signed a three-year deal last season, but it appears that he has not lived up to expectations this season.
We imagine the Bolts might want to blow up their roster a bit to create much-needed cap space for the 2024 season. They will reportedly be around $40 million over the cap heading into the offseason.
Justin Herbert, Khalil Mack, Keenan Allen, and Austin Ekeler are all huge proponents of what makes their cap overage so huge. Releasing Ekeler could also create some cap room.
Joseph-Day is likely to be picked up asap, especially by teams who are making a playoff push and eventual Super Bowl run.
