Chargers News: Bolts Target GM Denies Request to Interview
As they continue to seek out a permanent replacement for canned general manager Tom Telesco, it sounds like your Los Angeles Chargers are going to miss out on a highly-touted front office prospect, before they even have a chance to chat with him. And not even because he's going elsewhere!
A source informs Todd Archer of ESPN that Dallas Cowboys Vice President of Player Personnel Will McClay will not even opt to speak with other clubs for an interview with other teams.
Archer notes that the Chargers and the Washington Commanders, specifically, had sought conversations with McClay and had been circling him for a potential interview.
“He is very happy with being here,” Archer's source informed him.
Will McClay served as an arena football coach from 1993-2008, following a four-year playing stint (as a wide receiver and defensive back) for the then-Detroit Drive, from 1989-1992.
He was also an executive at a few of those arena football stops. After a year as the assistant director of pro scouting for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2001, he returned to arena football. Still, McClay somehow managed to moonlight as a scout with the Cowboys, even while still the defensive coordinator and head coach of the Dallas Desperados. He's been moving his way up through the Cowboys organization for the past 20 years. McClay has been in his current role since 2017.
Telesco was let go after a hilariously bad 63-21 Week 14 defeat at the hands of the Las Vegas Raiders. He was replaced by interim head coach JoJo Wooden. Per Eric Smith of Chargers.com, Wooden officially interviewed for the full-time gig with the Bolts earlier this week.
Funnily enough, considering how he was given the boot, Telesco is reportedly being considered for the main general manager job with the Raiders. Maybe Las Vegas owner Mark Davis was too busy getting yet another weird haircut on the day this rumor leaked, because otherwise this seems particularly silly for Vegas.
