The Los Angeles Chargers cut ties with their former head coach Anthony Lynn in 2020 after being the coach for four seasons. The Chargers wanted to go in a different direction and decided to hire Brandon Staley from the Rams, where he led them to the number one defense and gave him his first shot at being a head coach.

He will now enter his third season as the LA head coach, and thus far, he has been underwhelming. Los Angeles has a number of star players on their squad, and Staley has yet to win a playoff game for the Bolts. Because of this, 33rd Team writer Ross Tucker made an NFL Head Coach Rankings and listed Staley in the bottom half of NFL coaches going into the 2023 season.

20. Brandon Staley, Los Angeles Chargers

Seasons With Team: 2 | Head Coaching Record: 19-15

Analysis: I’m not quite sure what to make of Staley at this point. He has two winning seasons, but it feels like the Los Angeles Chargers lose a bunch of close games they shouldn’t. Case in point, their Wild Card playoff debacle in Jacksonville.

The 2022 playoff collapse didn't help with these rankings as well, I'm sure of it. Nonetheless, Staley is still questioned on whether he is the right guy for the job. They are in Los Angeles, the media capital of the world, and they have expecations they've never had compared to when they were in San Diego.

This will be a big year for Staley and the team as they will show they belong in the upper echelon of teams.

If LA underperforms, could Staley be on the hot seat?
