Chargers News: Detroit RBs Represent Lions Dream Fulfilled Vs Los Angeles

Bad look for the Chargers.

In the Bolts' gut-wrenching 41-38 loss to the Detroit Lions, there was one big takeaway when it came to what the Lions did so successfully on offense: run the ball.

Detroit backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs were terrific, combining for 193 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Interestingly, this exact type of performance and both backs' complementation of one another was the "vision" that Detroit had for their backfield when they signed Montgomery this past offseason, and selected Gibbs with the 12th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Per Tim Twentyman of detroitlions.com, Lions coach Dan Campbell had this to say:

"This is part of the vision coming to life... [those] two back there, the two headed monster."

With Montgomery finishing with a 75-yard touchdown and averaging an absurd 9.7 yards per carry, Gibbs added two touchdowns and 3 catches for 35 yards.

Given their different running styles and dangerously complementary skillset, it's no surprise that ahead of this game, I wrote this piece discussing Chargers defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley's concern with stopping both of them.

While it's always going to be difficult to stop such a potent backfield, the "vision coming to life" against your defense is never a position you want to be in. Gibbs and Montgomery have played several games together, and at no point had the duo looked this formidable.

The Chargers' poor defense was a stomping ground for the Lions' offense, and it may have given them a blueprint of what they want to do going forward with both Montgomery and Gibbs.
