Giff Smith has one of the toughest jobs that the NFL can possibly muster. The man was promoted from the inside to put a positive cap on the entire season for the Los Angeles Chargers.

The issue is that the Chargers have nothing more to play for than pride. The team has had a disastrous season that has shocked the entire NFL world. Justin Herbert and company entered the 2023 season as playoff hopefuls, with some being as daring as stating they could be a dark horse Super Bowl candidate.

What has transpired has been the bipolar opposite of that. The team is currently 5-9 and has looked nothing like they did in 2022.

To make matters worse, it took a lot longer for John and Dean Spanos to fire Brandon Staley, making it impossible to rebound the flailing season.

The only thing to do now is to show what the team is made of and win the remainder of their final three games. That is exactly what interim HC Giff Smith plans to do.

“We have three weeks to show the character of the men and the coaching staff that we are, to go out there and compete,” Smith said. “That’s what we’re looking to do, compete … and try to win these next three games.”

Showing character is the best thing that the Chargers can do for many reasons. It will show that the team can showcase its resolve despite dealing with a less-than-stellar season. It will also show that the organization has not given up on itself.

Smith could find himself landing the HC job should he shock the NFL world and lead this team to a 3-game winning streak to end the season. Though there are some alluring options for head coaches that will emerge in the 2024 season, Smith could still showcase his coaching capabilities by rallying this team into crucial victories.

The Chargers aren't a terrible team. They have just had to deal with mounting injuries and mismanagement that has not placed them in the right spot to win. They can still show future HC candidates how the team can be relevant in the AFC in 2024 by winning.
