Sometimes star players help a team win a game in spite of their head coach. Their skill trumps the decision-making, and it leads to a big win for a team.

This is exactly what happened with the Los Angeles Chargers over the weekend, as they narrowly avoided dropping to 0-3 on the season. The team saw big games from their star players, and it helped them escape Minnesota with a win, despite poor play calling from head coach Brandon Staley.

Guys like Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen led the way and helped get the Bolts their first win of the season. It was a needed performance from those two, and they may have saved the Chargers season for now.

“I didn’t really know the statistics of it until we became 0-2 and guys started talking about, `Well, if you go 0-3, I don’t think a team’s made the playoffs since … I don’t know,’” Chargers receiver Keenan Allen said.

Per The LA Times

The Bolts signal-caller completed 40 of 47 passes for 405 yards and three touchdowns, en route to the win. It was a special game from Herbert and came at the best time for the team.

Allen added in a career performance, catching 18 passes for 215 yards. The Vikings defense couldn’t stop him all game, and he made sure to continue getting the ball.

"The Chargers have a heartbeat, albeit a faint one. They started last season 1-2 but wound up making the playoffs, although that ended with an epic meltdown in a wild-card game at Jacksonville. But a step forward is a step forward. And no matter how it happened on this day, they came away with a little Minnesota miracle of their own."

Per Sam Farmer of The LA Times

A win is a win, even if it came in a very shaky way. But the Bolts can take this game, and learn from it. They will need to be better moving forward if they ever want to live up to the potential that they have.
