Chargers News: How LA's Wide Receiver Coach Impacted Mike Williams' Career
The Los Angeles Chargers are looked at as having among the best wide receiver cores in the league. The receivers on their roster possess an immense amount of talent, and it's spearheaded by their 2017 first-round pick, Mike Williams.
Williams has established himself among the short list of the most explosive wide receivers in the league. His jump ball ability, his deep threat ability, and his size have made him. Williams is a force to be reckoned with and was a big reason why LA took him early in the draft.
However, his first years in the NFL weren't smooth at all. He struggled to find his footing in the NFL, but that all changed in the 2021 offseason.
Charger assistant Chris Beatty sat down with Mike and challenged him in a way no one has in his time in the NFL.
Bolts insider Daniel Popper shared some insight on how that came to be.
What Beatty saw from Williams was untapped potential. Williams was entering his fifth NFL season on an expiring contract. He was a good NFL player, but he had not yet lived up to where the Chargers drafted him. Beatty had a plan to change that.“Here’s what’s going to happen,” Beatty remembers telling Williams that offseason. “If you do what I ask you to do, you’re going to get 80 catches, 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns and get a big contract.”Williams, a man of few words, gave Beatty a simple reply: “I got you, Coach.”

Beatty changed how LA uses Williams, resulting in the best season of his career. Although Williams fell short of Beatty's challenge, he still played to his capabilities which has changed how we view Williams as a player and his importance to the offense.
He had an incredible season and was rewarded with a three-year, $60 million extension after the 2021 season.
Beatty knew what Mike had in him, and he was able to unlock that. Willaims is now among the best-receiving core in the league, and he plays a massive part in that.
We cannot wait to see what else he has in store for us in 2023. If he stays healthy, we could see a repeat of 2021.
