Chargers News: Ian Rapoport Indicates Jim Harbaugh Most Interested In LA HC Vacancy
The Los Angeles Chargers could get their head coach as soon as next week. Now, nothing is set in stone, but what is established is that the Bolts will meet with Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh this week.
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, and according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Harbaugh and the Bolts have a mutual interest.
"My understanding is that there’s some mutual interest between Harbaugh and the Chargers," Rapoport said. "It would make the most sense for him out of any of the openings but we’ll see if that’s where he goes or if Michigan continues their fight to keep him trying to do and that is something they are trying to do."
This will be Harbaugh's first NFL interview in this cycle. In the past, he has met with the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings.
All signs point to Harbaugh coming back to the NFL and turning the Chargers around, as he did with Stanford, the 49ers, and the Michigan Wolverines. We don't want to count out chickens before they hatch, though, as Michigan may not let him walk away with no rebuttal.
At the moment, Jim's deal runs through 2026; however, Michigan offered him a 10-year, $125 million contract extension in late December that would make him the highest-paid coach in college football. We're not sure if that's still on the table, but I'm sure LA would need to match that if they want to lure him out of Ann Arbor.
We could get an answer as early as this week, as a lot will ride on Jim's choice. All eyes will be on this interview!
