Chargers News: Jim Harbaugh Could Still Face Suspension From Sanctions

The Bolts head coach may still have to pay the piper.

Just because he's back in the NFL and out of the college ranks, that apparently does not necessarily mean that new Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh won't still be penalized as a result of his two concurrent NCAA investigations.

Per Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the league would be “unlikely to make itself a safe harbor for Harbaugh to escape what could be substantial NCAA discipline.”

Essentially, it seems like he might have to undergo a major suspension, even while working at the NFL level, if the NCAA determines he deserves further punishment for signal stealing this year. Remember, he was already suspended for the final four games of the Wolverines' regular season, before being reinstated in time for a romp to the College Football Playoff title.

It's a fascinating hypothetical. Luckily, it seems as if Harbaugh is porting over most of his coaching staffers from Michigan, so theoretically the system could survive a few weeks if he is punished further. Why he was reinstated at all for the playoffs if this is going to continue to hang over him is beyond me, frankly. It's a bizarre footnote to what has otherwise been the Chargers' most exciting head coaching hire in eons.
