Chargers News: Justin Herbert Among Early Picks For Passing Leader
From a regular season standpoint, Justin Herbert should not have many goals for himself this year other than winning his division. He has already put forth three straight seasons where he's lived up to the hype that was surrounding him coming out of Oregon... now it's time to build up that playoff resume.
But experts all around the NFL know that he is poised to dominate in 2023 and has all of the tools around him to build his first legit MVP campaign. Herbert has been in the conversations before but there has always been a number of guys ahead of him in voting.
He's already looking healthy after undergoing a shoulder operation this offseason and beyond just his two top WR targets in Mike Williams and Keenan Allen running it back, Austin Ekeler will return for one of the biggest seasons of his career along with a new face in Quentin Johnston.
Experts at Last Word on Sports pointed out something that I found very interesting. They were also making the case that Herbert could be primed to be the NFL's passing leader in 2023 for the first time in his own young career.
A lot of this will have to do with the arrival of Kellen Moore as his new offensive coordinator. He gave Dak Prescott a ton of freedom during his time in Dallas and will likely do the same with Herbert here in LA.
"Herbert finished his rookie season at
sixth
in passing yards. He followed that up with a second place finish, and was primed to explode in 2022. Instead he had to deal with a rib injury, banged up wide receivers, and a play caller that loved check downs even with a quarterback that can make a paper airplane look like a fighter jet. This season could be the
best version of Herbert
yet, and Kellen Moore let Dak Prescott sling it for 240 yards a game even with some injury shortened weeks. If Quentin Johnston has anything to say about it, Herbert is primed for a 5,000 plus yard season."
