One of the factors that made Justin Herbert's 2023 campaign so impressive was the fact that he played through multiple injuries to help will the Chargers to the playoffs. Once the offseason hit, he decided to take care of an important one (a torn labrum) and undergo surgery while he had the time to recover and not miss important games.

It has already been about two months since the superstar quarterback decided to undergo the procedure. Even though there was initial concern about him not having a full offseason to improve, the organization understood that his health comes first. Herbert was optimistic immediately after the operation.

However, we are now finding out that despite LA's front office beginning new extension talks with their starting QB, they are not positive what stage he is at in his recovery. Shoulder surgery is tricky even if it was on the arm he doesn't throw with.

ESPN's Lindsey Thiry revealed this information following a press conference with the GM Tom Telesco where he revealed they'll have a clearer answer around May 1.

"After undergoing surgery on the labrum in his left shoulder on Jan. 25, it remains unclear what Herbert’s participation level will be when the Chargers open their offseason program next month, with workouts starting in late May."

Telesco would also go on to add that the organization is relieved that his surgery is nothing out of the sorts and they are just waiting to see how he looks once he's in training camp with them.

The 25-year-old took the field in 17 games last season and threw for 4,379 yards with 25 touchdowns and a 68% completion rate. He is rumored to potentially receive up to $500 million from the Chargers.
