Chargers News: LA Interviews Incumbent Assistant For Head Coach Gig
Your Los Angeles Chargers may look to hire the guy they passed over for their interim head coaching gig once they canned Brandon Staley with three games left on their regular season schedule.
The team conducted an interview with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore on Tuesday to fill their permanent vacancy at the position, per Omar Navarro of Chargers.com.
Los Angeles opted to elevate former outside linebackers coach Giff Smith to the head job to finish out the season on an interim basis. Giff reportedly also interviewed with LA for the permanent job earlier today, Navarro writes.
The Bolts' offense was erratic this season. Although Pro Bowl quarterback Justin Herbert passed for 3,134 yards, and 20 touchdowns, while recording 228 rushing yards and three scores across just 13 games, he struggled to convert close late games into wins when he was healthy.
Six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Keenan Allen also enjoyed a productive season before his own injury troubles shelved him near the end of the season. Still, Allen's 108 catches set a single-season record. He logged 1,243 yards and seven touchdowns across 13 games.
A quarterback in his playing days, Moore linked up with the Detroit Lions out of Boise State in 2012. His six-year career also included a stint on the Dallas Cowboys. In 2018, he joined the Cowboys as the club's quarterbacks coach, before becoming their offensive coordinator the next season. During his tenure in that role, from 2019-22, Dallas' 27.7 points per game was the second-most in the league. The Cowboys' 391.0 net yards per game also ranked second in that same period.
Moore signed on with Los Angeles ahead of this season, following a prolific four-season stint with the Cowboys.
